I will be adding more to this very soon, some pictures, some descriptions of the numbers listed, and much much more, but I wanted to make sure I got something up here before I had forgotten.

I’m not sure I completely believe it, but its the same every year. April sneaks up on me and suddenly I am in full baseball fanatic mode, complete with going to games, doing fantasy leagues and of course trying to keep up with all the end of the semester work for my classes. Yeah thats right its only about one month left of class and plus I have juries coming up. So I have to memorize 5 jazz tunes, perfect my classical piece and so far write 4 papers and do 3 projects. So how dilligent was I this week towards accomplishing all of that. Well I have been practicing my but off for the past couple days (in fact I am writting this because after two and a half hours of practicing my face has said stop) and other then that I need to get to work on some projects. One thing that was awesome this week though was a nice trip to the Phillies Opening Night Game / Dollar Dog night.
DOLLAR DOG NIGHT !!! Chase Utley and Ryan Howard Howard And Utley Cole Takes The Mound The Schmitter

There are a couple pictures to definetly check out from the game. Tonight I will be having some of my brothers from my fraternity to my house along with some others in the music department to watch the Phillies game.

So like I said its amazing how quick the end of the semester is sneaking up on me but every year it just come faster and faster. To think next year at this time Ill be getting ready to graduate and even more amazing, Ill be on my job search. Definitely going to have to say this has all gone way to fast!

What a weekend !!!

Ok so all I can say is AMAZING !!! The foo fighters played for two hours plus and were so so so so so so so good. Opening up for them was Serj Tankian. He was the lead singer for the group system of a down and I must admit I had no expectation for him but he was really good live. Great voice and some cool music too. (Yes a music major who likes and will admit to liking rock music GASP) Here is a Picture I took of The stage from where I was sitting while Serj played Serj Tankian (sp?)

So as the foo fighters set up I noticed that there was this like second stage in front of where me and my friend Matt were sitting. To the awesome surprise of me and everyone else the second stage was the setting for an acoustic type set by the Foo’s which featured My Hero and closed with Everlong. Here are some pictures I got from the B Stage and the main stage.

The B Stage Dave Grohl El Foo Fighters

All i can say is it was amazing. A funny highlight of the night was when Dave Grohl went through the band to say who actually could read music. Out of 8 only 3, the violin player, the aux percussionist and the piano player, all hired guns not actually members of the Foo Fighters. Unfortunately the concert had to end and after dropping off my friend Matt I was off to the MENC convention up in New Brunswick. So at a little past 12:30am I started my drive to Rutgers. 44oz of Wawa coffee, a wawa pretzel, 2 pretzels from & Eleven, a gingerale, and one snow storm later I made it to Rutgers by about 1:45ish. Got my room key get to my room where I think i’m with my friend eric and of course I walk into the room to find some random luggage and my friend and fraternity brother Bill in the room with his really sick girlfriend carla. So yeah some how I got the wrong key. Hung out ended up talking till 4:30 in the morning woke up at 7 and was off to the clinics.

Ironically the snowfall had been enough to cancel classes at Rowan and at most schools in South Jersey, of course this on the one day I wasnt going to school anyway. So the clinics were cool. Got back to the room and was dead tired but got a phone call from my friend from home Eric ( Paco ) and went out with him on the Rutgers scene for the night and had a great time.
Saturday was another day for clinics but as I was so tired I opted to sleep in a lil, make a stop at the grease trucks (my second stop at Rutgers most amazing attraction ) and was off to drop of my friend Danielle back at Rowan.

Stopped to visit some people ( yes music majors do manage to hold relationships with people outside the department ) and then was off to enjoy a night with the family. All in all an amazing weekend. I do believe on one of my cameras I have a picture o the drive to rutgers, maybe when I can find it I will add it.

Wait what ha

Ok so I assumed ( and we all know what assuming does ) that I had been doing this right but apparently the last three blogs I tried to post I didn’t click something and thus haven’t had any posted. So heres the plan over the next day and a half I will be updating my blog and going back and doing my best to incorporate the other blogs that got lost, I just wanted to post this first.

Phil

Well I got five minutes before class right now and I am going to try and blog saturday but until then I just wanted to say:

FOO FIGHTERS CONCERT TONIGHT !!!!!

and then i drive up for the NJMEA ( New Jersey Music Educators Association ) Convention for tomorrow and saturday, then saturday its family time and then back to Rowan at night for a little relaxing. So much fun jam packed in the next few days and I promise I will have some great pictures from both the FOO FIGHTERS ( OH YEAH CANT WAIT ) and from convention.

Ok so some how every time I go to add pictures to this thing I sit down get out the cord, look in my bag, and realize oh thats right in my ever continuing attempts to get more pictures I forgot to take the camera out of my ( Insert either Gym bag, truck, bedroom, practice room, locker, instrument locker, trombone case ).

So some updates. The jazz festival was great. Laptop The three days were filled with some awesome bands, some bands that we were definitely able to to learn from, meaning what to and not to do, and of course many of us got to see old band directors and friends. Friday was my big day and of course I woke up very late threw on my clothes rushed over to campus. One nice thing about commuting is after 4 years you know a few ways to get to campus depending on what you need, there is the standard gas saving way, the way you can speed without fear of cops (not that I’m promoting that), the scenic route, the way where if you want you just happen to miss the exit for Rowan and find yourself heading towards the beach, and last but not least the way to avoid traffic. In my situation I of course took option B. So I arrived at Rowan just in time to get to see my old high school and to hear some of my private students. Proud would definitely be the answer for how I felt after hearing the bands play. They brought with them an energy and an amount of fun that lightened up the mood of the festival, especially being that they were the first band of the day to perform.

Odd side story here. For those of you coming to college one shocking little thing to get used to is the use of laptops everywhere. I have become a fanatic I must admit, I take and utilize my laptop everywhere, and with Rowan having a wireless campus it isn’t hard. But as normal as it is for us to use I can see that some professors dislike or at least distrust the whole idea. I was watching my old high school, where I still teach regularly ( be there tonight in fact ) and not really even looking down at my computer, I only had it out in fact to find out what instrument one of the adjudicators played, and I had a professor come over and kind of hint that he wanted it gone because he didn’t like people having them out while watching bands and stuff and he didn’t know what I was doing. So i put it away not looking to rock the boat plus I had the information I needed anyway, but what I couldn’t believe was how something that had no impact on the band I was watching, nor on how my professor was watching the band, nor how the audience was watching the band could be a big deal. I suppose there is a moral to this story somewhere but Im at a loss for it.

The rest of my friday was awesome, I went to Pitman High School where I did a clinic with their Jazz Band and got to talk to some of the students afterwards. Had an awesome time there and finished the day with the concert.

A View from the Stage (a little view from on stage)

I took my solo of course and apparently did well. I was very happy to see one of my private students came out with his mom and grandmother to see the concert. Its always awesome to see some new faces at the concerts as well as young faces really enjoying themselves.

So this now brings me up to last week, worked monday ( yup with many of my classes cancelled I took the opportunity to work) I don’t know if I have mentioned before but I pay for college on my own and until this year had no loans. So when the chance to work comes around I take it. And after 13 hours of painting I came home, prepared a speech for my Contemporary World Theater Class (yup thats right even as a music major I still have to take an arts intensive course, as long as its non music related) and then went through tuesday fairly well.

Wednesday I got to practice for an awesome four hours and really made a lot of progress. Wednesday night got to witness an amazing concert by the dean of the music department, Doc Rawlins. His name isn’t Doc, its Robert but I don’t think I hear anyone call him anything but Doc. I mean the man has like 3 degrees and an electrical contracting certificate, pretty much the stories of this man are mythical. But back to the concert. He played the music of Be Bop legend Tadd Dameron, who unless you are perusing the Real Book you might have never heard of. So not only did we listen to the amazing and ridiculous talent of Doc on Alto (oh yeah and he played Clarinet and Flute, you know just because) we got a little history lesson as well since the man has a more encyclopedic knowledge of jazz then anyone I have ever seen.

Thursday and Friday were not worth mentioning really and now this brings us up to the weekend and today. Which well to be honest Ill talk about another time, Im in the middle of my warmups for the day and need to get some practice in before my orchestration class (followed by a trip to the gym). So yeah once again I promise, pictures with the next blog!

So, other then that today, weather wise, was one of the most beautiful days we have had in a while (67 degree and sunny) why would this be the second most wonderful time of year. WELL OBVIOUSLY IT BECAUSE ITS JAZZ FEST WEEK. Thats right, starting today and running through tomorrow and friday Rowan hosts its annual high school jazz festival and clinic. Each year it provides high school jazz bands with a chance to come to Rowan and play for the faculty and students, as well as a few renowned jazz artists, and receive feedback and ideas as to how to improve.

Why might you ask is this such an awesome week. Well a few reasons. First of all, you skip almost every class you can think of, and not just to sleep in. In fact come to think of it I will be awake earlier these three days then I have been all semester, but what you skip class for is the chance to become much more prepared as an educator. You get to see all that is good, and all that is bad with high school jazz programs. You learn what directors know what they are doing, which ones aren’t so sure, and which bands are truly learning something about jazz. It is a great chance as a future educator to network with your future colleagues and to get your name out. I know for me tomorrow I will be observing one local high school that on friday I will actually be visiting to clinic at. Friday morning I will also get to see my old high school perform as well as some of my private students.

In the meantime I will be running errands, selling hot dogs and meatball sandwiches, and more importantly getting to hang out with my friends while doing it all. ITs nice to have no “real” responsibilities for a couple days, and to get to hang out. Like I said jazz fest is the second most wonderful time of the year !

DAY 5

So it is day 5 of being back after winter break. It feels great to be back inside ( I spent all break working outside framing a house ) as well as great to see all of my friends and professors, and most of all Welcome Back to get to play in ensembles again. So far I am having the usual problems, adjusting to having a couple 12 hr days at school ( being a commuter that really means 13 hr days since it is a half an hour drive each way for me) having to be broke ( I pay tuition and so far owe almost nothing ) and learning how to utilize every spare amount of time in some way ( hence the 20 min blog I am now writing ).

So I will be writing in here quite frequently, posting some pictures from various things here on campus and off , and just offering my two cents about things. So feel free to check back, to read past blogs, and keep track of some of the funny, mundane, and entertaining aspects of being a music education major here at Rowan.
